Keeping MumKeeping Mum (2005)

IMDB rating: 6.80

Plot: Gloria Goodfellow has a normal life in the countryside along with her family. She’s the mother of two children, one precocious teenager girl and a timid boy, who’s been bullied by a bunch of kids from his school. Occassionally, their peace is disrupted by a neighbor’s annoying dog or a meddler neighbor. Gloria’s husband, Reverend Walter Goodfellow, is a clumsy but well respected priest, who’s preparing to give a speech in a religious convention at Cornwall. One morning a charming, efficient and quite kind lady, Grace Hawkins, arrives to work as a housekeeper at the Goodfellows’ house. The family’s life will change forever, because Grace will care for its integrity in her own special way. First, Grace will help Walter to relax and find his funny side during masses. Then, Grace finds out that Gloria is having an affair with her golf instructor, a sort of pervert American man, interested in Gloria’s daughter as well. Last but not least, Grace will manage herself to get rid of the bullies who are giving a hard time to Petey. Despite this ideal reality, Gloria will discover a secret that Grace has been hiding… for more than 40 years.

Why have the council let a property lie empty for two years?
An old woman who I used to affectionately refer to as nan that lived in my street was taken into a care home about two years ago and I expected the council to do what they have to do and then give it to a family that desperately needs it but instead they’ve continued to cut her lawns and hedge in summer as if she was still living there and everyone has complained because no property should lie empty for that amount of time.

We have all complained and yet they do nothing, why? they have sent round council officers twice and haven’t had any response when they knocked the door. We mean no harm to the old woman but she doesn’t live there now, her daughter has kept all her mothers things there so it does look like she’s staying there but her mum has been out of the house for 2 years and we don’t know what’s happening, what can be done so that someone gets this property? it’s a shame that it just sits there when people are desperately needing housed.
The council still own the property, there’s no one living in it, why won’t they do anything?

you KNOW its a council house??

If so, then someone is still paying the rent.

There are very very few actual Council Houses left in this country - they’ve all been stock transferred to Housing Associations so the council won’t be the landlord so if you are complaining to the council there’ll be naff all they can do. Which department are the "council officers" coming from, because it won’t be housing? If the daughter’s paying the rent then there are absolutely no grounds for eviction. The worse you could do would be to blow her up to Housing Benefit - if it’s no longer her permanent home, which after 2 years it’s safe to assume it isn’t, then she’s not entitled to Housing Benefit or Supporting People grant on it.

Actually the worst case scenario is that the daughter has told the landlord that the tenant is living there with the daughter. That would allow the daughter to apply for inclusion on the tenancy agreement as a joint tenant and inherit her mother’s right to buy. Now that really would be fraud.
