Plot: Maximus is a powerful Roman general, loved by the people and the aging Emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Before his death, the Emperor chooses Maximus to be his heir over his own son, Commodus, and a power struggle leaves Maximus and his family condemned to death. The powerful general is unable to save his family, and his loss of will allows him to get captured and put into the Gladiator games until he dies. The only desire that fuels him now is the chance to rise to the top so that he will be able to look into the eyes of the man who will feel his revenge.

Nokosee: Rise of the New Seminole by Micco Mann. Nokosee, the teenage "pagan caveman" has been groomed by his nutcase dad– a one time Special Forces dude– to be the first of the "New Seminole" to wage an eco-war on the "Outside." Nokosee knows survival skills, martial arts and how to kill with his little finger. He also knows how to fire Stinger missiles which his dad has stockpiled in hidden hammocks across the Everglades. Lots of action, adventure, violence, murder, decapitations, mothers shooting boyfriends, boyfriends using girlfriends as gator bait (literally), and a true-to-life "first time" scene that is both humorous, tender, and true. I highly recommend it.

The King Must Die by Mary Renault. Set in ancient Greece it follows Theseus on a journey of discovery while painting a vivid picture of the times. Loved the descriptions of young uninhibited Greeks running buck naked up hills and through forests and making love among the flowers. The scenes of naked teens jumping bulls cries out for a cinematic interpretation. Ms. Renault’s written a series of historical novels set in this period and all of them are so worthy.

James Clavell’s Shogun is a great place to start for action, adventure and samurais run amok. A true page turner set in feudal Japan.
